History
Crypto Stamp Safe Drache of 25 February 2025 is a Solo AT companion edition to the CS 5.2 Dragon joint family of October 2024. It follows the pattern of the first "Crypto Stamp Safe" (companion edition to CS 5.0 Bear, released February 2023) and thus establishes a standalone AT-specific edition category: the Safe companion edition.
In contrast to joint editions, where multiple postal services jointly vary a unified motif, the Safe companion edition is a national extension: only Österreichische Post emits it, but it uses the digital identity of a previous joint edition as a basis. The Safe Drache thus combines two strategic functions: it is a standalone collector edition with its own mintage and numbering, while at the same time extending the digital experience of the CS 5.2 Dragon by an entirely new dimension.
The Morphing Concept
The central added value of the Safe Drache is the morphing function. Collectors who own both a CS 5.2 Dragon (in one of the four national joint-edition variants — AT, NL, LU, BE) and a CS Safe Drache can combine them: the digital identity of the Dragon is transformed through morphing into a unique baby dragon.
A total of 40 different baby dragon designs exist. Which baby dragon emerges from morphing depends on two factors:
- Trigger symbol choice: When purchasing the Safe Drache, collectors choose between treasure and magic book as the transformation symbol. This choice is physically and digitally documented.
- Source variant of the Dragon: Which color variant of the CS 5.2 Dragon (Black, Green, Blue, Yellow, Red) and which national variant (AT, NL, LU, BE) is the morphing subject.
The combination of both factors determines which of the 40 baby dragons emerges. Each morphing result is thus a random but two-variable-influenced choice.
Pattern: Safe Companion Editions as an AT Specialty
The Safe Drache is not the first time Österreichische Post has emitted a Safe companion edition. As early as February 2023, the first Crypto Stamp Safe (CS 5.0 Safe) appeared — as a companion edition to CS 5.0 Bear. A two-year pattern is thereby established:
- February 2023: CS 5.0 Bear (Solo AT) + CS 5.0 Safe (Solo AT, companion edition)
- February 2025: CS Safe Drache (Solo AT, companion edition to CS 5.2 Dragon of October 2024)
The pattern suggests that Österreichische Post is establishing the Safe companion editions as a regular format, appearing roughly annually or biennially. Collectors who want to own all CS editions must therefore factor in two editions per CS generation: a joint edition (mainstream) and a Solo AT Safe companion edition.
The Physical Design
The physical stamp production also has a particularity: the Safe Drache carries a hidden door — a secret flap in the stamp that reveals a magical motif. This is a novelty in crypto stamp history. Until now, all crypto stamps were physically flat, classical stamp formats. The Safe Drache extends the format by a tactile, almost playful component.
The flap function is not merely decorative — it is part of the authentication and activation logic. Opening the flap (presumably) reveals a hidden activation code that can be used to activate the digital twins. This is an enhancement of the previous QR-code activation pattern.
Pricing and Mintage
- Retail price: 9.90 EUR
- Mintage: 8,000 pieces (significantly below mainstream editions)
- Sales: crypto.post.at online store (primary), regular post offices, philately sales outlets
The small mintage of 8,000 pieces is deliberately chosen: the Safe edition is a premium companion edition that does not need to cover the full collector market. It complements the much larger joint edition (mintage figures unknown but presumably in the five- to six-figure range).
Significance in the Crypto Stamp Ecosystem
The Safe Drache marks several trends of crypto stamp evolution:
- Vertical integration: Instead of only releasing new editions, the Safe companion edition deepens the experience of existing editions
- Programmable stamps: The morphing function makes crypto stamps "programmable" — the digital identity can be changed by other stamps
- Set mechanics: The reward for complete collectors becomes more concrete — those who own Joint + Safe receive more digital depth
- Physical innovation: The hidden flap as a physical element is a new design feature
- AT special status: Solo AT editions like the Safe Drache are a clear statement: Austria retains the inventor role and continues developing the format
The Safe Drache is thus not merely another edition, but proof that the crypto stamp world can still experiment and create something new after 6 years.
