NFTimbre — France's Crypto Stamp Programme

The NFTimbre series is the crypto stamp programme by Philaposte (La Poste Groupe), launched on 18 September 2023. By May 2026, seven editions (#NFTimbre1 through #NFTimbre7) appeared with approximately 20 individual blocks total. Editions alternate between single-block themes and multi-block narratives. The series uses Tezos blockchain technology, developed with Nomadic Labs and Wagmi Studio. The nftimbre.com platform provides digital wallet functionality.

The "NFTimbre" Series

The NFTimbre series is France's official crypto stamp programme by Philaposte (philatelic subsidiary of La Poste Groupe), launched on 18 September 2023 and continuously expanded since then. As of May 2026, seven named editions #NFTimbre1 through #NFTimbre7 have been issued — the series is not closed but actively running.

A total of about 20 individual blocks. Due to incompletely publicly communicated mintages per edition (especially NFTimbre3, 4, 6), an exact total mintage cannot be determined — estimated at 250,000–400,000 booklets across all editions.

Structural Features of the Series

1. Multi-block storytelling as programme identity. La Poste consistently uses crypto stamps as a narrative unit — an edition consists of multiple blocks that together form a story or thematic tetrad. Examples:

  • NFTimbre2 (triptych): three acts of an oneiric story with a young woman by the window, hot air balloon, and rendezvous with a young man
  • NFTimbre4 (Eiffel Tower in Bronze/Silver/Gold): three precious-metal variations of the same motif
  • NFTimbre6 (Avatar): four different characters and scenes from the Avatar universe
  • NFTimbre7 (Mont-Saint-Michel): four imaginary stories — galactic, heroic, robotic, mystical

In contrast, NFTimbre1 (Univers du Courrier) and NFTimbre3 (Croix-Rouge) are single-block editions — atomic themes without multi-block construction.

2. Artist-first identity. Unlike the AI-driven German architecture series, La Poste consistently relies on named contemporary illustrators:

EditionArtistBackground

NFTimbre2AI + studioFirst AI use in the programme

NFTimbre5Gwen KeravalIllustrator

NFTimbre7Nicolas Barrome-ForguesMultidisciplinary artist (engraving, stained glass, 3D)

The only AI use in the programme is NFTimbre2 (2024) — explicitly described as a "tool or innovative process in the artistic creation path", in hybrid mode "l'humain" + "l'Intelligence Artificielle". This cautious AI use stands in contrast to Deutsche Post's AI-first doctrine (DALL-E adopted unchanged).

3. Tezos blockchain — singularity in the crypto stamp universe. La Poste is the only national postal operator consistently using the Tezos blockchain. In comparison:

Tech stackIssuer (examples)
Variuscard / Polygon (joint family)AT, NL, LU, BE, HR (CS 6+), PT, CH (?)
Stampsdaq / PolygonCTT (PT), Gibraltar (2023+)
Atomic Hub / WaxGibraltar (2021)
Ciphers.me / PolygonDE
Wagmi / TezosFR (NFTimbre)

The Tezos choice was explicitly justified by ecological responsibility: Tezos consumes little energy per transaction compared to Proof-of-Work chains (Ethereum, Bitcoin). La Poste thus positions itself as an issuer with green credentials — fitting the brand strategy of a state-owned service with sustainability mandate.

4. Self-custody-friendly platform. The NFTimbre platform nftimbre.com is hybrid: standard mode is custodial wallet (for beginners), but NFTs can be transferred to external Tezos wallets — Kukai (web), Temple (browser extension), Umami (desktop). This self-custody option is a central UX difference from Ciphers.me (custodial-only).

5. Multi-tier pack architecture. Instead of a color-lottery system (as with DE / AT / NL / LU / BE / HR / PT), La Poste developed a multi-tier pack system:

  • Individual blocks: EUR 8 + EUR 4 shipping (shipping free from 2 blocks or pack)
  • Standard pack: EUR 32 (all blocks of the edition + bonus NFT digital-only) — typically limited to 5,000 sets
  • Pack Platinium (NFTimbre4, NFTimbre7): 2,000 limited sets with identical serial numbers
  • Pack PRESTIGE (NFTimbre6): EUR 70, only 500 sets, first 500 serial numbers

The multi-tier pack architecture is La Poste's answer to the international competitor tier system — without copying the color-lottery concept.

6. Always-Activated NFT. With NFTimbre, the NFT is automatically generated when the physical block is shipped. The buyer receives the NFT in their gallery without an additional activation step. This architectural decision explains the substantially higher conversion rate compared to the Ciphers.me model (manual PIN activation required).

Sales Dynamics

NFTimbre1 delivered the first hard data point on successful NFT adoption in France:

  • Launch day: 13,050 NFTs in under 4 hours (about EUR 145,000 daily revenue)
  • Day 30: cumulative ~25,000 NFTs (≈ 25 % conversion)
  • La Poste planned destruction of unsold NFTs after 1 year (30.09.2024)

This 25 % conversion in 30 days is 22× higher than the German conversion rate over 10 months (1.1 % for Brandenburg Gate). The structural explanation lies in:

  1. Always-Activated NFT architecture (no activation step for buyers)
  2. Markup factor 1.0 × instead of 6.2 × (face value = retail price)
  3. Artist-first identity with established contemporary illustrators
  4. Tezos self-custody option for Web3-savvy buyers
  5. Multi-block storytelling as differentiation from joint family standard fare

International Comparative Position

The NFTimbre series thus occupies a strategic position as a continental competitor to joint family dominance — large enough to be relevant, but structurally different enough not to enter the AT/NL/LU/BE/PT/HR constellation.

Programme Outlook

La Poste has made no official programme-end announcement. The continuous edition sequence (typically 2-4 editions per year) and the fact that NFTimbre7 was already issued on 24 March 2026 indicate programme continuation. Possible developments for 2026/2027:

  • Further multi-block editions in storytelling mode
  • Possible joint editions with other postal services (none documented so far)
  • Possible expansion of licence collaborations (after Avatar)
  • Possible integration of trading functionalities on the platform

In contrast to the German programme pause (October 2025 to 2027), the NFTimbre series proceeds without interruption — a strong indicator of commercial viability of the model.
