Wertstufe R (Aangetekend)
Dutch tariff code face value for registered mail (Aangetekend) up to 20g — standard face value of all PostNL crypto stamps instead of a numerical euro face value.
What Is the Face Value "R" (Aangetekend)?
Face value "R" (Aangetekend) is the Dutch tariff code face value for registered mail — the standard face value of all PostNL crypto stamps. Instead of a numerical euro amount, the stamp simply bears the letter "R" as face value labeling.
How It Works
The face value "R" works differently than numerical face values:
- Tariff code system: "R" corresponds to PostNL's currently valid registered mail tariff
- Adaptive validity: if the registered mail tariff is increased, the stamp remains valid
- Domestic registered: for letters within the Netherlands up to 20 grams
- Unlimited temporal validity: no expiration
This mechanic is common in the Netherlands for collector stamps and ensures that the stamp always represents the current tariff value.
Application in PostNL Crypto Stamps
All PostNL crypto stamps bear the face value "R":
| Edition | Date | Face value | Retail price |
|---|---|---|---|
| NL Crypto Stamp Bull | 22.09.2022 | R | ~€9 |
| NL Crypto Stamp 2 Lion | 10.10.2023 | R | €9.25 |
| NL Crypto Stamp Safe | 10.10.2023 | R | €9.25 |
| NL Gold Edition | 30.11.2023 | R (up to 2 kg) | €500 |
| NL Crypto Stamp Dragon | 21.10.2024 | R | ~€9 |
| NL Crypto Stamp Hermes | 18.09.2025 | R | ~€9 |
Notably: the NL Gold Edition bears an extended face value "R up to 2 kg" (for premium registered mail) — a significantly higher tariff category than the standard R.
Strategic Logic
The "R" face value is strategically clever for PostNL:
- Collector practice: stamp is actually usable for regular post
- Tariff adaptation: PostNL can change tariffs without devaluing the stamps
- International visibility: "R" is known as a postal symbol worldwide
- Premium differentiation: Gold Edition can communicate extended "R up to 2 kg" tariff
Differentiation from "3 World" (BE)
Belgium (bpost) uses a comparable but differently structured tariff code logic:
| Aspect | NL "R" | BE "3 World" |
|---|---|---|
| Geography | domestic (NL) | worldwide (except BE/EU) |
| Weight limit | up to 20g | up to 100g |
| Letter category | Registered | Non-standardized |
| Tariff category | Standard | Premium |
Both issuers forgo numerical euro face values — a deliberate stamp collector convention in contrast to AT (numerical values).
Significance for Collectors
The "R" face value makes NL crypto stamps practically usable stamps — unlike purely decorative collector items in other markets. Theoretically, a collector could actually use an NL crypto stamp for a domestic registered letter, which of course rarely happens (too high collector value).
The face value is also a differentiation element of PostNL's crypto stamp branding — all national variants in the joint edition family have different face value conventions reflecting respective national postal service traditions.
