Royal Mail
Royal Mail is the postal operator of the United Kingdom, founded in 1516 under King Henry VIII. Privatized since 2013 as Royal Mail plc. Royal Mail has not issued crypto stamps (as of May 2026). The barcoded stamps introduced in 2022 with 2D Datamatrix codes are security codes with video content, but without blockchain component or NFT functionality. Guernsey Post, a Crown Dependency outside the Royal Mail structure, issued crypto stamps in 2024. Royal Mail and Canada Post are the only G7 postal operators without a crypto stamp programme.

Royal Mail in the Crypto Stamp Ecosystem
Royal Mail is the state-owned postal operator of the United Kingdom, founded in 1516 as the "Royal Mail Service" under King Henry VIII — one of the oldest postal administrations in the world. Privatized since 2013 as "Royal Mail plc". With over 130,000 employees and a stamp programme that issues dozens of "Special Stamps" annually on cultural, historical, and pop-cultural themes (e.g. AC/DC 2025, Royal Armouries 2025, etc.), Royal Mail is one of the largest stamp issuers in the G7 space.
In the crypto stamp ecosystem, however, Royal Mail occupies a clear negative position: no official crypto stamp or NFT programme. As of May 2026, Royal Mail has launched no NFT editions, announced no blockchain integration with stamps, and made no public hybrid model plans.
The 2D Datamatrix "Barcoded Stamps" — Not Crypto Stamps
The only "digital" thing about Royal Mail stamps are the 2D Datamatrix codes introduced in February 2022 on the standard definitive stamps. These "barcoded stamps" are sometimes incorrectly referred to as crypto stamps in the crypto stamp community — but technically they are fundamentally different:
| Characteristic | 2D Datamatrix Stamp (Royal Mail) | Crypto Stamp (FR/DE/IT/AT) |
|---|---|---|
| Code type | 2D Datamatrix barcode (printed) | NFT on blockchain |
| Content | Server URL for video content | Token with ownership proof |
| Collector value | None (every stamp identical) | High (digital collector item) |
| Secondary market | Only classical philately | Active NFT secondary market |
| Ownership proof | Physical possession | Blockchain wallet proof |
| Face value | Yes (full function) | Yes (with hybrid model) |
| Self-custody | n/a | Yes (varies) |
| External verification | n/a | Yes (block explorer) |
The 2D codes have three functions:
- Security/authentication — prevents stamp counterfeiting
- Video content — recipients can scan the code and watch a video (first 2022 video: animated gift-themed video)
- Tracking function — internal logistics
This is conceptually closer to QR codes on advertising posters than to NFTs. The old non-barcoded stamps were accepted until 31.01.2023, after which they had to be exchanged via Royal Mail's "Swap Out" programme.
Why Doesn't Royal Mail Have Crypto Stamps?
Several possible reasons for Royal Mail's negative position:
1. Conservative brand identity. Royal Mail is a tradition-rich institution with over 500 years of history and close connection to the British monarchy (all standard stamps show the Queen/King profile). NFT speculation doesn't fit the conservative brand identity.
2. Privacy and compliance. UK has strict data protection and financial regulations (UK GDPR, Financial Conduct Authority). NFTs raise legal questions about consumer protection, anti-money laundering, and crypto tax regulation that Royal Mail wishes to avoid.
3. Privatization status. Royal Mail has been a privatized stock company since 2013 (Royal Mail plc, formerly listed on London Stock Exchange, taken over by EP Group in 2024). Shareholders focus on core business profitability rather than experimental crypto initiatives.
4. Ransomware trauma. In January 2023, Royal Mail was the victim of a LockBit ransomware attack demanding crypto ransom. Royal Mail refused payment. The trauma of the cyber attack presumably reinforced crypto skepticism in the company.
5. Market trend caution. The 2022-2023 NFT bear market (FTX collapse, platform closures like Topps NFT, Kraken NFT) presumably deterred traditional postal operators from NFT initiatives.
The "British Isles" Context: Guernsey Post as Pioneer
Important differentiation: in the "British Isles", multiple postal operators exist, not just Royal Mail. The Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories have their own postal administrations with independent stamp programmes:
| Postal operator | Status | Crypto stamp? |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Mail (UK) | G7 postal operator | No |
| Guernsey Post (Crown Dependency) | independent | Yes, July 2024 (Golden Guernsey Goats) |
| Jersey Post (Crown Dependency) | independent | No |
| Isle of Man Post (Crown Dependency) | independent | No |
| Gibraltar Post (Overseas Territory) | independent | Yes, May 2021 (Cryptocurrency Stamp 4 GBP) |
Guernsey Post launched crypto stamps in July 2024 as the first "British Isles" postal operator. Edition: Golden Guernsey Goats (Billy and Nanny) in hybrid model with physical stamp + digital twin via QR code link. Guernsey Post is thus the first UK-near issuer with crypto stamps — but Guernsey is not part of UK in the strict sense (Crown Dependency without representation in UK Parliament).
Gibraltar Post already issued a cryptocurrency-themed stamp at 4 GBP in May 2021 — before Royal Mail's 2D Datamatrix initiative. Also here: Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory, not UK itself.
The overall picture: crypto stamps exist in the "British Isles", but not from Royal Mail. The UK-central postal administration remains the only major British issuer without a crypto stamp programme.
G7 Comparative Position
In G7 crypto stamp comparison, Royal Mail occupies the negative position:
| G7 Issuer | Crypto stamp status | First edition | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deutsche Post (DE) | Active (pause 2025) | 02.11.2023 | Hybrid + AI |
| La Poste (FR) | Active | 18.09.2023 | Hybrid + artist |
| Poste Italiane (IT) | Active (possible pause) | 21.11.2024 | Hybrid + box set |
| Japan Post (JP) | Inactive since 03/2023 | 03.10.2022 | NFT-only |
| USPS (US) | Active | 02.11.2021 | NFT-only public chain |
| Royal Mail (UK) | Negative | — | No crypto stamp |
| Canada Post (CA) | Negative | — | No crypto stamp |
5 out of 7 G7 postal operators have launched at least one crypto stamp edition. Royal Mail and Canada Post are the two remaining negative entries.
Possible Future Development
Royal Mail could theoretically launch a crypto stamp programme at any time — the technical, legal, and marketing prerequisites are achievable. Possible triggers for a future programme:
- Royal theme — royal jubilee (Charles III's coronation 2023 was celebrated as a physical stamp edition, without NFT)
- Pop-cultural theme — Royal Mail often collaborates with British pop culture (AC/DC 2025, Queen, Beatles, Star Wars, James Bond) — an NFT adaptation would be conceivable
- Cross-border joint issue — a joint edition with Guernsey Post or other Crown Dependencies could lead Royal Mail into the NFT space without identity loss
As of May 2026, however, no concrete crypto stamp programme is publicly announced by Royal Mail. The wiki thus documents Royal Mail as a clear G7 negative entry with complete explanation of the 2D Datamatrix codes as non-crypto stamps.
Collector Note
Collectors searching for Royal Mail crypto stamps will find none — Royal Mail has not issued any. Collectors of British-themed crypto stamps can turn to the following independent postal operators:
- Guernsey Post (Crown Dependency, crypto stamp since July 2024)
- Gibraltar Post (Overseas Territory, cryptocurrency stamp since May 2021)
- Royal Mail pop-cultural specials (purely physical, non-NFT) for classical collectors
Royal Mail's 2D Datamatrix stamps have no collector value as crypto stamps — they are regular definitive stamps with authentication code. Classical philately collectors can collect them like traditional stamps, but they don't belong in crypto stamp collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Has Royal Mail issued crypto stamps or NFT stamps?
No — as of May 2026, Royal Mail has not issued any crypto stamps or NFT stamps. There is no official Royal Mail NFT drop, no blockchain integration with stamps, no hybrid model with physical-digital twin. The only "digital" thing about Royal Mail stamps are the 2D Datamatrix codes introduced in 2022 on the standard definitive stamps with the Queen's profile (or since September 2022 King Charles III's profile). These 2D codes allow recipients to view video content when they scan the code with an app. This is not a crypto stamp — no NFT, no blockchain entry, no token architecture. It is a marketing communication function with classical QR/Datamatrix barcodes.
What are Royal Mail's 2D Datamatrix stamps?
The "barcoded stamps" are a Royal Mail initiative that started in 2022. On each definitive stamp, alongside the classical Queen's profile, a 2D Datamatrix code was printed — a square black-and-white barcode, similar to a QR code but more compact. Function: (1) Security/authentication — prevents stamp counterfeiting. (2) Video content — recipients can scan the code with an app and watch a video. The first video in 2022 was an animated gift-themed video, more videos followed. (3) Tracking function for internal logistics. Important: the 2D codes are not NFTs, not blockchain entries, not tokens. They are classical print barcodes that reference server content — comparable to QR codes on advertising posters. The old non-barcoded stamps were accepted until 31.01.2023, after which they had to be exchanged via the "Swap Out" programme for the new 2D stamps.
Are there crypto stamps in the "British Isles" at all?
Yes, but not from Royal Mail. Guernsey Post, the postal operator of Crown Dependency Guernsey (one of the Channel Islands, not part of UK in the strict sense, but part of the "British Isles"), launched its first crypto stamp edition in July 2024. The edition features Golden Guernsey Goats Billy and Nanny and follows the hybrid model (physical stamp + digital twin via QR code link to blockchain). Guernsey Post is thus the first "British Isles" postal operator with crypto stamps — not Royal Mail. The Crown Dependencies (Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man) and British Overseas Territories (Gibraltar — already documented with crypto stamp 2021) have own postal administrations and own stamp programmes that operate independently of Royal Mail. Royal Mail (central UK) thus remains a clear G7 negative entry.
