History

CTT Correios de Portugal issued its first crypto stamp on 18 September 2025 as part of the CS 6 Mythologie joint edition. The stamp features Poseidon, Greek god of the sea and horses. CTT joined Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland in this five-country release.

CTT operates as Portugal's national postal service since 1520, making it one of the oldest postal administrations to adopt crypto stamp technology. The company's logo has featured a horseback messenger since 1953.

Technical Specifications

The Poseidon stamp exists in five color variants on the Polygon blockchain:

  • Preto (Black): 13,075 pieces (52.3%)
  • Verde (Green): 6,675 pieces (26.7%)
  • Azul (Blue): 3,325 pieces (13.3%)
  • Amarelo (Yellow): 1,675 pieces (6.7%)
  • Vermelho (Red): 250 pieces (1.0%)

Total mintage: 25,000 pieces. Retail price: EUR 9.90. The stamp carries postal validity for domestic mail within Portugal.

Designer Lisa Filzi created the artwork featuring Poseidon with traditional iconographic elements. The design continues the visual style established in CS 5.2 Dragon and other CS 6 variants.

Motif Selection

Poseidon connects to Portuguese identity through two domains:

Maritime heritage. Portugal's history centers on Atlantic exploration. Vasco da Gama reached India via the Cape of Good Hope (1497-1499). Bartolomeu Dias discovered the Cape route (1488). Ferdinand Magellan initiated the first circumnavigation (1519). The Portuguese empire extended from Brazil through Africa to Goa, Macau, and East Timor.

Postal tradition. Horses served as CTT's primary mail delivery method for centuries, connecting Lisbon with Porto, Évora, Coimbra, and colonial territories. The CTT logo's horseback messenger reflects this heritage. Poseidon's dual role as god of seas and horses links both traditions.

Distribution Channels

CTT distributes the stamp through:

  1. Lojas CTT: 569 post offices across all Portuguese districts
  2. Pontos CTT: 1,793 partner locations in shops, newsstands, and gas stations
  3. Online shop: ctt.pt with international shipping
  4. Philatelic service: Specialized collector support
  5. Bundle option: 200-set package via Österreichische Post containing all five CS 6 national variants for EUR 75

The combined network totals approximately 5,000 sales points throughout Portugal.

Variant Distribution and Rarity

The five-tier rarity system follows the established crypto stamp model. Vermelho (Red) represents the rarest tier at 1% of total mintage (250 pieces). Preto (Black) forms the common tier at 52.3% (13,075 pieces).

Each variant corresponds to a specific hex color code:

  • Vermelho: #C8281F
  • Amarelo: #F5C518
  • Azul: #1F4FA8
  • Verde: #3F8B3F
  • Preto: #1F1E1C

Market Position

As CTT's first crypto stamp, the Poseidon edition occupies a premiere position similar to Austria's CS 1.0 Unicorn (2019), Luxembourg's CS 1.0 Lion (2023), and Belgium's CS 5.2 Dragon (2024). First issues from new postal administrations have historically maintained strong secondary market interest.

The stamp targets multiple collector segments:

  • Portuguese postal history collectors
  • Maritime and exploration theme collectors
  • CS 6 Mythologie completists
  • Crypto stamp premiere collectors

Secondary Market

Trading occurs through established philatelic platforms including Delcampe, eBay, Catawiki, and Portuguese dealers such as Numismarte. Price ranges depend on variant rarity and market conditions.

The Vermelho variant's 250-piece mintage positions it among the scarcest CS 6 variants across all national editions. Common Preto variants provide accessible entry points for new collectors.

Position in Crypto Stamp Development

The Poseidon stamp marks several developments in crypto stamp history:

  1. First Portuguese crypto stamp program
  2. First Iberian Peninsula participant in joint editions
  3. Contribution to the first five-country joint edition
  4. Addition of one of Europe's oldest postal services (established 1520) to crypto stamp issuers

The CS 6 Mythologie 2025 edition represents the largest multi-national crypto stamp collaboration to date, with Poseidon forming the Portuguese contribution to this coordinated release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Poseidon for Portugal?

Poseidon is god of the seas, earthquakes, storms, and — crucially — horses. The choice thus carries a doubled symbolism: Portugal has been a maritime nation since Vasco da Gama, Bartolomeu Dias, and Magellan, with an identity inseparably connected to the Atlantic. Meanwhile, the CTT logo has shown a horseback messenger since 1953 — horses were the central means of postal delivery for centuries. Few other gods from the Greek pantheon would carry this dual layer of meaning.

Is this the first Portuguese crypto stamp?

Yes. Crypto Stamp Poseidon of 18 September 2025 is the very first Portuguese crypto stamp — and at the same time CTT premiere in the crypto stamp format. Portugal thus follows the pattern of Belgium (bpost premiere with CS 5.2 Dragon 2024) and Luxembourg (POST Luxembourg premiere with CS 5.1 Lion 2023): direct entry into a joint edition instead of a solo premiere. CTT is thus the fifth and currently last joint partner in the crypto stamp family.

Where can I buy the Poseidon crypto stamp?

At all Lojas CTT (569 post offices), at Pontos CTT (1,793 post partners), at the CTT online shop at ctt.pt, via the CTT philately service, and as part of the 200-set bundle via Österreichische Post (all 5 national CS 6 stamps for 75 EUR). On the secondary market, PT crypto stamps circulate on Delcampe, eBay, and through specialized stamp dealers.

What does the horse symbolism mean for CTT?

CTT was founded in 1520 by King Manuel I and is one of the oldest postal services in the world. For centuries, postal deliveries were primarily by horse messengers. In 1953, CTT adopted the horseback messenger as official logo, which has defined CTT identity to this day. With Poseidon as god of horses, the stamp connects the analog past with the digital present.

What postal value does the Poseidon stamp have?

The retail price of 9.90 EUR corresponds to the Portuguese rate for higher-weight national letters or small packages. The Poseidon crypto stamp is thus valid for national mail but is in practice primarily traded as a collector item. International collectors ordering the stamp from Portugal should note customs and shipping fees — direct online order via ctt.pt is usually the most cost-effective option.
