Crypto Stamp 1 – Vehicles

Postereum – Croatia's First Crypto Stamp

Pioneer #2 worldwide, launched on World Stamp Day 2020 with UBIK

Hrvatska Pošta issued Crypto Stamp 1 "Vehicles" on 9 September 2020 (World Stamp Day) — Eastern Europe's first crypto stamp and the world's second after Austria's pioneer edition from June 2019. The edition depicts five modern postal delivery vehicles in decreasing rarity: van (60,000), train (25,000), ship (10,000), airplane (4,000), and drone (1,000). Face value HRK 50 (approximately EUR 6.60). The 100,000 NFTs were issued as ERC-721 tokens on Ethereum, under the name "Postereum 1". The Croatian Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Association (UBIK) supported the design, while Bitx handled technical implementation. 500 stamps reserved for cryptocurrency payment sold out within 16 hours. The drone variant with just 1,000 pieces reflects Hrvatska Pošta's tests with drone deliveries to remote areas.

Technical Implementation

The edition uses the same technical architecture as Austrian Post's 2019 release:

  • Smart contract deployed on Ethereum mainnet
  • ERC-721 non-fungible token standard
  • Each stamp linked to a unique NFT
  • Wallet connectivity via MetaMask and other Ethereum wallets
  • Platform hosted at kripto.posta.hr with /v1 path for this edition
  • Secondary trading on OpenSea

This technical stack remained standard for subsequent Hrvatska Pošta editions until V4 (2022) switched to Polygon.

Partnership Structure

UBIK (Udruga za Blockchain i Kriptovalute), the Croatian blockchain industry association, participated in concept development and provided community access. This represents a different partnership model from commercial distributors used by other postal operators.

Bitx, a Croatian blockchain company, developed the smart contract and platform infrastructure. The company named the token Postereum — combining Posta and Ethereum. Bitx continued as technology partner for editions V2, V3, and V4.

Cryptocurrency Payment Test

Hrvatska Pošta offered 500 stamps for direct cryptocurrency payment. These sold out in 16 hours. This test preceded the postal operator's October 2021 launch of cryptocurrency sales at post offices.

Release Pattern

Hrvatska Pošta crypto stamp releases:

  • V1 Vehicles: 9 September 2020 (World Stamp Day)
  • V2 Postal History: 15 December 2020
  • V3 Rimac Nevera: 9 September 2021 (World Stamp Day)
  • V4 Tesla: 20 December 2022

The V1 and V3 editions specifically used the World Stamp Day date, established in 1909 as an annual philatelic observance.

Reception

The edition established Hrvatska Pošta as the second postal operator to implement the NFT-twin model. The Drone variant (1,000 examples) became the most sought-after due to its low mintage and connection to Hrvatska Pošta's actual drone delivery program.

The cryptocurrency payment option demonstrated collector demand for Web3 payment methods. The 16-hour sellout of the 500 cryptocurrency-payable stamps informed the postal operator's subsequent digital payment strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is UBIK and what role does it play in the crypto stamp programme?

UBIK (Udruga za Blockchain i Kriptovalute / Croatian Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Association) is the central blockchain industry association of Croatia. Founded as a non-profit, UBIK unites Croatian blockchain developers, crypto firms, and Web3 enthusiasts. In Hrvatska Pošta Crypto Stamp 1, UBIK members advise Hrvatska Pošta on NFT standard choice (ERC-721) and tech architecture. The UBIK network serves as initial collector pool, while UBIK endorsement gives the postal operator Web3 credibility. This issuer-community partnership is a structural model: postal operators collaborate with local blockchain communities instead of with commercial distributors like Variuscard for AT. Other examples of community collaboration: AT with MoneyMuseum, PL with local crypto bloggers.

Why was "Vehicles" specifically chosen as pioneer theme?

The Vehicles theme choice reflects several strategic logics. The 5 vehicles are the real postal delivery means of Hrvatska Pošta — the theme connects crypto innovation with authentic postal identity. The drone (1,000 ex, rarest variant) reflects Hrvatska Pošta drone tests for remote delivery in islands and mountain regions — an innovation of the postal operator. The decreasing rarity system with van most common (60k) and drone rarest (1k) reflects actual frequency in postal operations daily life. The launch on 09.09.2020, World Stamp Day, underscores philatelic tradition. The 5 variants with clearly graduated rarity enable a complete-the-set collecting goal and reinforce collector engagement.
