Poste Italiane in the Crypto Stamp Ecosystem
Poste Italiane S.p.A. is Italy's state-owned postal operator, founded in 1862, with around 120,000 employees and group revenue of approximately EUR 12 billion (2023). Majority shareholders are the Italian state and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), a state-controlled investment bank. The corporate structure is broadly diversified: mail and parcel delivery, banking (BancoPosta), insurance (Poste Vita), logistics, and mobile telephony (PosteMobile).
In the crypto stamp comparison, Poste Italiane occupies a distinctive position: smallest G7 issuer by programme volume (1,000 sets in 14 months), but with the structurally most independent approach among Western European postal operators — box-set format, retrospective themes, in-house developed platform.
Programme: Cripto Folder
Crypto stamp activity started on 21 November 2024 at the 139th Veronafil philatelic fair with the Posta Prioritaria — Collezione Gialla, a limited box set with Cripto Folder NFT. The second edition Collezione Blu followed on 13 March 2025 with similar structure. Both editions are dedicated to the same historical theme: the evolution of Posta Prioritaria from 1999 to 2008.
| # | Edition | Date | Mintage | Contents | Redemption deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Collezione Gialla | 21.11.2024 | 400 numbered | 4 folders + stamps + NFT card | 31.12.2025 |
| 2 | Collezione Blu | 13.03.2025 | 600 numbered | 4 folders + 35 stamps + 3 carnets + 3 sheets + 160-year souvenir + NFT card | 31.12.2025 |
As of May 2026: No third edition visible since March 2025 (14-month pause). Possible explanations: regular annual rhythm with next edition late 2026, or programme pause analogous to the German architecture series.
Tech Stack: Polygon / DTO / nft.poste.it
Poste Italiane chose a tech stack distinct from other major European issuers:
Blockchain: Polygon. EVM-compatible, Layer 2 on Ethereum. The same chain as the Variuscard joint family (AT/NL/LU/BE/HR/PT) and Deutsche Post (Ciphers.me). Polygon is more resource-efficient than Ethereum mainnet but still more energy-intensive than Tezos (FR).
In-house platform development. The NFT platform nft.poste.it was developed together with the internal DTO division (Direzione Tecnologie e Operations) — no external agency and no platform provider like Variuscard or Ciphers.me. This in-house strategy is unusual in the crypto stamp space:
| Issuer | Tech partner | Status |
|---|---|---|
| AT/NL/LU/BE/HR/PT | Variuscard (AT) | external platform provider |
| FR | Wagmi Studio + Nomadic Labs | external agencies |
| DE | Ciphers.me | external platform provider |
| IT | DTO (internal) | own development |
The in-house model has two implications: (1) Higher control and data sovereignty — important for a state-owned issuer with GDPR sensitivity; (2) Lower scalability — the small mintages (400-600 sets) may be deliberately chosen to avoid overloading the in-house platform.
Platform architecture:
- Custodial default wallet on nft.poste.it
- Redemption mechanic via QR code on Cripto Card
- Self-custody export possible (Polygon wallets — MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, etc.)
- Secondary market explicitly enabled — transfer to other blockchain accounts allowed
- Important: After redemption, Poste Italiane assumes no further responsibility for the NFT (clear disjunction between issuer and asset)
Structural Characteristics
The Italian architecture differs structurally from all other major crypto stamp programmes:
1. Box-set format instead of booklets/sheets. The NFT component is a card in a premium box set — not a booklet or sheet with stamps. The set contains:
- 4 numbered philatelic folders
- 35+ historical stamps
- Carnets and special sheets (lamine)
- A souvenir sheet (e.g. 160 years Poste Italiane in Blu)
- A separate "NFT card" with QR code for redemption
2. Retrospective theme. Both editions celebrate Posta Prioritaria 1999-2008 — past postal history. This is unique in the crypto stamp space: other issuers typically choose contemporary themes (architecture, pop culture, AI art, animal or plant world). Italy is deliberately backward-looking.
3. Very small mintages. The 400 + 600 = 1,000 sets are a premium collector approach in contrast to:
- AT Mainstream: 30,000-150,000 per edition
- DE Architecture: 250,000 per edition
- FR NFTimbre1: 100,000
- HR Joint Family: typically 50,000-100,000
4. Time-limited NFT redemption. Both editions have 31.12.2025 as redemption deadline — those who don't redeem the code in time lose the NFT. This activation deadline is unique in the crypto stamp space:
| Issuer | Activation mechanic |
|---|---|
| AT/NL/LU/BE/HR/PT | Optional, no expiry |
| FR (NFTimbre) | Automatic on shipment, no code |
| DE (Ciphers.me) | Manual via PIN, no expiry |
| IT (Cripto Folder) | Code with expiry date (31.12.2025) |
5. Veronafil as launch stage. Unlike FR (VivaTech, NFC Lisbon — tech fairs) and DE (Museum für Kommunikation Berlin — state stage), Italy chooses Veronafil as launch setting — one of the most important international philatelic fairs. This choice positions the Cripto Folder editions as classical-philatelic premium products for established collectors, not as tech innovation for Web3 buyers.
Sales Performance
The Collezione Gialla (400 sets) was, according to press releases, sold out "in pochissimo tempo" — within a few weeks. The small mintage and premium collector target group make a sellout plausible.
The Collezione Blu (600 sets) was marketed with a reference to the first edition being sold out — the sales status as of May 2026 is not publicly communicated. The redemption deadline of 31.12.2025 has already passed — all NFTs not redeemed by then have expired.
Estimated programme revenue: 1,000 sets × estimated EUR 50-150 per set = EUR 50,000-150,000 gross revenue. Substantially smaller volume compared to the multi-million revenues of the joint family, but with high margin per collector.
Strategic Position
Poste Italiane positions itself in the crypto stamp ecosystem as:
- Premium niche issuer with very small mintages and box-set format
- Classical-philatelic innovator that uses NFTs as add-ons to traditional collector products — not as programme identity
- In-house tech pioneer with own platform development (different from all other major European issuers)
- Retrospective theme provider with historical themes instead of contemporary visual worlds
- Strict activation discipline with redemption expiry date
The Italian model is thus conceptual antipole to the German AI-first architecture and the French always-activated NFT platform: here the NFT is a bonus element to the classical philatelic box set, not the programme centre. This strategy is consistent with the conservative, collector-oriented character of Italian philately — and with the 160-year tradition of Poste Italiane (1862-2022).

Frequently Asked Questions
How many crypto stamp editions has Poste Italiane issued so far?
Two editions under the "Cripto Folder" brand: Collezione Gialla (21 November 2024, launched at the 139th Veronafil philatelic fair, 400 numbered box sets, sold out within weeks) and Collezione Blu (13 March 2025, 600 numbered box sets, with souvenir sheet for the 160th anniversary of Poste Italiane). Both editions retrospectively cover the evolution of Posta Prioritaria from 1999 to 2008. A total of 1,000 box sets in 14 months — a premium collector approach with very small mintages, fundamentally different from the high run quantities of the joint family (AT/NL/LU/BE/HR/PT) or DE/FR. As of May 2026, 14 months have passed since the Blu edition without a third — possible programme pause or annual rhythm.
Which blockchain and platform does Poste Italiane use?
Polygon — an EVM-compatible Layer 2 chain, the same blockchain as the German programme (Ciphers.me) and the Variuscard joint family. The platform `nft.poste.it` was developed in-house together with the internal DTO (Direzione Tecnologie e Operations) division — unlike the FR position (external agency Wagmi Studio) or the DE position (external provider Ciphers.me). This in-house strategy is unusual in the crypto stamp space: very few postal operators have the technical capacity to build their own platform. Secondary market is explicitly permitted — NFTs are transferable to other Polygon wallets (self-custody capable), but Poste Italiane assumes no further responsibility for the NFTs after redemption.
What is conceptually distinctive about the Italian architecture?
Four structural peculiarities: (1) Box-set format instead of individual booklets or sheets — a classical- philatelic premium package with 4 folders, many historical stamps, and a separate NFT card. (2) Retrospective theme: evolution of Posta Prioritaria 1999-2008 — backward-looking celebration instead of contemporary themes like art, pop culture, or architecture. (3) Very small mintages (400 + 600 = 1,000 sets total) — premium collector approach in contrast to the 100,000-250,000 mintages of other programmes. (4) Time-limited NFT redemption until 31.12.2025 for both editions — those who don't redeem the NFT code in time lose the digital twin. This activation deadline is unique in the crypto stamp space.
