About the Motif
The Doge motif references the internet meme that began in 2010 with a photo of a Japanese Shiba Inu named Kabosu. The meme's Comic Sans caption language (such wow, very crypto, much stamp) became embedded in crypto community culture.
On Crypto Stamp 2.0, designer David Gruber presents the Shiba Inu in a stylized, geometrically reduced form for the ISO credit card format of 86 × 54 mm. The name Doge — rather than Dog — is adopted directly from the meme tradition.
Connection to Dogecoin
In December 2013, programmers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched the Dogecoin cryptocurrency as a parody of the Bitcoin market. Choosing the Doge meme as mascot was intended ironically, yet Dogecoin developed into one of the oldest cryptocurrencies, reaching market capitalizations in the tens of billions. Crypto Stamp 2.0 Doge appeared as Elon Musk's 2020/21 Twitter activity brought renewed attention to the coin.
Pre-Order and Availability
Pre-orders opened 20 May 2020. By 25 May the Geldmarie reported that the Doge motif was sold out in the Post's online shop. Doge was the first of the four CS 2.0 motifs to sell out during pre-order. Secondary market premiums of 50 to 200% over face value appeared within days.
Secondary Market
Doge stamps trade on Delcampe, eBay, and through specialized stamp dealers. Black variants (31,380 pieces) sell between EUR 25 and EUR 80 depending on stamp block condition. Green and blue variants command higher prices. Red variants (600 pieces) reach four-figure EUR amounts at collector auctions.
The digital component — the ERC-721 token on Ethereum — trades infrequently on NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea. Most original buyers either never activated their token or bundled it into a Crypto Stamp Collection.
Place in the Set
Within the four-motif edition, Doge is the only motif directly tied to a cryptocurrency. On 2 November 2021, Österreichische Post released the Crypto Stamp Gold Edition Doge — a 1,000-piece limited edition with an embedded 1-gram gold bar from Münze Österreich. 99 pieces were distributed via sweepstakes; the remainder sold at EUR 500 retail price and sold out immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Doge motif have to do with crypto?
Doge is one of the most recognizable internet memes of the 2010s — a Japanese Shiba Inu with a quirky "much-wow" inner monologue. In 2013, the meme inspired the parody cryptocurrency Dogecoin, which later grew into a serious top-20 cryptocurrency. This made Doge the unofficial mascot of crypto-culture humor.
How quickly did the Doge variant sell out?
By 25 May 2020 — five days after pre-orders opened and a full month before the official issue date. Doge was the first of the four CS 2.0 motifs to disappear from the Post's online shop.
Which color is the rarest?
Red (ANK Crypto stamp 2e) with 600 pieces — 1% of the Doge mintage of 60,000. Red Doges trade at the highest premiums of any CS 2.0 piece on secondary markets.
On which blockchain is the NFT?
On Ethereum as an ERC-721 token. Crypto Stamp 2.0 was the final Mainstream edition before the Polygon migration that began with CS 3.0 in 2021.
Is there a connection to the Crypto Stamp Gold Edition Doge 2021?
Yes. On 2 November 2021, the Crypto Stamp Gold Edition Doge was released — a special edition of 1,000 pieces with an embedded 1-gram gold bar from Münze Österreich. It revisits the same motif but belongs to the Gold Editions program rather than the Mainstream series.
