About PostNL

PostNL (officially Koninklijke PostNL B.V.) is the national postal administration of the Netherlands and one of the central pioneers of joint-edition crypto stamps. With the first NL crypto stamp on 22 September 2022 — the Bull edition jointly with Austrian Post — PostNL became the first joint partner issuer in the crypto stamp world.

Position in the Crypto Stamp Ecosystem

PostNL plays a unique role: it is the first postal service worldwide to issue a joint crypto stamp with another postal service. Before PostNL, only solo issuers had emitted crypto stamps (Austria, Croatia, UN, Liechtenstein, Switzerland). PostNL defined the format of the bilateral joint edition and thus laid the foundation for the later joint-edition tradition with AT Post.

History: 226 Years of Dutch Postal Service

The historical root of PostNL goes back to 1799, when Dutch postal services were organized in a national system — founded on 1 January 1799 in The Hague, on the French model. The key milestones:

• 1799: National postal system established in The Hague
• 1850: Postal Act — postal delivery established as public service
• 1852: First Dutch stamp
• 1928: Official renaming to PTT Post
• 1989: Privatization as Koninklijke PTT Nederland (KPN)
• 1998: Split into TPG (Post) and KPN (telecom)
• 2006: Renamed to TNT
• 31 May 2011: Demerger into PostNL (Mail/Parcel) and TNT Express
• 2022: First crypto stamp (NL Crypto Stamp Bull, with AT)

Today's PostNL thus exists as an independent brand since 2011 but is heir to a 226-year Dutch postal tradition. This deep historical rootedness gives PostNL's crypto stamp activities particular philatelic credibility.

Strategy: Consistently Collaborative

PostNL has a deliberately collaborative crypto stamp strategy: all crypto stamps emitted so far are part of joint editions with other European postal services. This strategy is remarkable:

• No solo crypto stamp: Unlike Hrvatska Pošta (all solo) or Swiss Post (mix), PostNL emits exclusively collaboratively
• Variuscard platform: PostNL uses the Austrian Variuscard platform — no own tech infrastructure
• Designer takeover: Sandra Smulders (NL) also designs the AT and LU variants of the trilateral Lion edition

This strategy has advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

• Cost-efficient (tech stack shared with AT)
• International visibility (through joint issues)
• Collector cross-pool effect

Disadvantages:

• Less brand independence
• Dependence on AT Post roadmap
• No full control over tech stack

Two Important Solo Extensions

PostNL has emitted two important solo extensions of the joint editions that expand the collaborative concept:

1. NL Crypto Stamp Safe (10.10.2023)

A morphing mechanic edition with 3 variants (Dummy, Bottle, Rainbow) that can be combined with the Lion variant to create new NFT motifs. This is the first crypto stamp edition with morphing mechanic.

2. NL Crypto Stamp 2 Gold Edition (30.11.2023)

A premium solo edition with only 111 pieces mintage, €500 retail price, and 1 gram of gold (24 carat, Au 999.9) in the souvenir sheet edge — manufactured by the Austrian Mint. This positions PostNL as a premium issuer in the crypto stamp world.

Designer: Sandra Smulders / Vormgoed

The NL crypto stamps are consistently designed by Sandra Smulders from the design studio Vormgoed in Gouda. Notably: Smulders is also the joint designer of the trilateral Lion edition for PostNL, AT Post, and POST Luxembourg (October 2023) — an unusual designer constellation where a Dutch designer also designed the Austrian and Luxembourg variants.

Smulders founded Vormgoed in 2007 in Gouda and specialized in logo and corporate style design. Her other PostNL works:

Technology Architecture

Blockchain: Polygon

PostNL uses the Polygon blockchain — compatible with the Polygon PoS used by Austrian Post and the Polygon used by Hrvatska Pošta. The Polygon choice is consistent for AT joint editions: all four joint edition partners (AT, NL, LU, BE) use Polygon, avoiding cross-chain complications.

Platform: Variuscard / cryptostamp.com

PostNL uses the Austrian Variuscard platform (Vienna) for the crypto stamp tech infrastructure — i.e. the same platform as AT Post, LU, and BE. The central platform is cryptostamp.com, complemented by national channels like shop.postnl.nl.

Distribution Channels

PostNL uses two primary distribution channels:

1. shop.postnl.nl — the regular PostNL online shop with crypto stamp section
2. crypto.post.com (collaborative on-chain shop) — the central crypto platform of the AT joint edition family

The second platform is a joint platform with AT Post — it shows how closely the tech infrastructure of the joint partners is connected.

Face Value "R" — Aangetekend

A NL-specific peculiarity: crypto stamps have the face value "R" (for Registered mail / Aangetekend) instead of a numerical Euro face value. These can be used for Dutch registered mail up to 20g. This tariff code face value is common in the Netherlands: tariffs are adjusted regularly but the stamp remains valid indefinitely.

The face value "R" makes NL crypto stamps practically usable for Dutch collectors — they can actually be used for regular post, unlike merely decorative collector stamps.
